The bustling busyness of the holidays are over and here we are in January of a brand new year. To many, January is not a month to be enjoyed. The weather tends to be downright obnoxious . Days so cold that you don’t want to be outside to enjoy the sun, followed by days of low, dark, grey clouds spewing out cold drops of rain. It is a month that your financial state is front and center with taxes looming ahead and maybe a little too much shopping in December making things a little tight.  And, after two months filled with holidays off, this month seems like work just goes on and on and on. But to me and so many other gardeners all these things take a back seat to the excitement of GARDEN DREAMS, making this one of the most loved months of the year!

January is the month when garden catalogs start filling the mail boxes. I can just hear the mail carriers muttering with all the extra mail wondering  why, in a world of internet access, does anyone need paper catalogs anymore? Unless they are a gardener. Then they know why. There is something about sitting down with a cup of tea and a stack of catalogs with pictures and detailed descriptions of everything you could ever want to grow. There is something about turning the pages and feeling the paper that is part of the whole experience. You imagine yourself planting them and watching them grow (abundantly of course). You can even smell and taste them. Ah, the starting of dreams.  And I do mean this is just the start.  Because all this inspiration makes you go find all of your gardening books and read them until ideas about your plot of planting glory is swirling in your head like a whirlpool in a flooding river. So many ideas! They need to be written down!

Ahhh. January Bliss!

Ahhh. January Bliss!

This leads to tablets.  All kinds. Ones with little squares to lay out all the beds in scale. Lined, sturdy ones with ring binders for writing  many, many lists. Sketch pads to put an artist touch to your dreams. And lots of pens and pencils and markers and… Oh. I am getting way carried away here! But bear with me. It’s January and I LOVE IT! A month made of dreams and hope. Who could want more.  Hallmark should start making “Happy January Gardener’s Dreams Month” cards. If they did I would send them to all of you.
